Prepare for cheery, sunny yellow blooms of Calendula – in our Level Zero Flowers for Pollinators project, August is the perfect month to plant them. This heritage variety is called Golden Emperor and will flower for many months if you take spent blooms off. Be sure to leave some on at the end though, and they will go to seed by themselves, and become cheery volunteers in your garden. Lovely. There are about 25 seeds in your packet, by weight.
Planting:Soak seed overnight in luke warm water before planting, to hydrate the seed. Plant direct into the soil, just below the surface, in full sun. Water in lightly with a gentle Shower on your pattern Sprayer. We choose August in our project to sow seed, but any time Autumn-Spring is also fine.
Growth: Grows to about 40cm high and 30cm wide, and flowers begin about 2 months after planting.
Edible Blooms: Petals provide a little peppery citrus tang in salads, on cakes, and a lovely yellow tint when mixed through rice.
